Picture Books, with Beth Terrill

November 1st, 2021 - December 5th, 2021

with Brooke McIntyre

Group started

Preparing your work for submission? In this intimate workshop, you'll receive market and editorial feedback on a picture book manuscript from Beth Terrill, editor at North South Books, and you will exchange critiques with a small group of peers.

This workshop is geared towards writers who are getting ready to query, agented and/or published.

How it works

You'll submit a single manuscript at the group start, then spend the next weeks critiquing peer stories. Beth Terrill will submit her notes near the critique deadline. After critiques are complete, we will have a debrief call where each writer gets individual time with Beth to address key feedback themes and brainstorm next steps for their manuscript.

The group workshop format accelerates learning because, not only will you receive feedback on your own work, you will also be able to see and hear Beth's feedback on the group's stories, which you will have read and critiqued.

Each agent and editor event we offer also comes with a submission opportunity.

Workload

Participants should be sure they have at least 1 hour to give for critiquing each person's manuscript. Because this is a group of 9, this means you should have at least 8 hours available for your peers' stories.

Inked Voices and Beth Terrill are pleased to offer a workshop spot free of charge to a writer of color or from a traditionally marginalized background. Apply by Oct 9. https://inkedvoices.typeform.com/to/dExQAgNe

About Brooke McIntyre

Beth Terrill is the US picture book editor for NorthSouth Books. Beth is looking for fiction and nonfiction picture book manuscripts that are universal, inclusive, and original. She recently acquired Climb On! by Baptiste Paul, illustrated by Jacqueline Alcántara and Violet and the Crumbs by Abigail Rayner, illustrated by Molly Ruttan. Other books she's edited include Peace (Baptiste Paul, Miranda Paul, Estelí Meza), Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos (Monica Brown, John Para), The Field (Baptiste Paul, Jacqueline Alcántara), The True Story of Zippy Chippy (Artie Bennett, Dave Szalay), Chilly da Vinci (Jarrett Rutland) , A Time to Act—JFK’s Big Speech (Shana Corey, R. Gregory Christie), and Surf's Up (Kwame Alexander, Daniel Miyares).

Critique style: One of my mentors once told me that the first time you read a manuscript is your most sensitive read. With this in mind, I try to share all of my initial observations, questions, and feelings that the manuscript evokes. I also focus on story, structure, language, voice, pacing, characters, inclusiveness, illustration potential, etc.
